1) From book to movie
One of the most exciting things about seeing your favorite book on the big screen is seeing the story come to life. Lizz Buchanan said she’s not only thrilled about the movie but how it “encourages everyone to start reading.” However, adapting a book from a movie can be a dangerous game. “The Hunger Games is a fantastic book series—in fact, my favorite—and all I’m hoping for is they won’t butcher the movie,” said Joe Owens ’15. Added Kate Longley ’13, “I hope the movie stays true to the book.”
2) A Love Story
As in every teenage drama, The Hunger Games features not one but two romantic couple who catch the hearts of the audience. In an epic love triangle, protagonist Katniss, played by Jennifer Lawrence, must choose between her best friend Gale, played by Liam Hemsworth, and her fellow tribute Peeta, played by Josh Hutcherson, who she bonds with when training for the Hunger Games. Said Marisa Bernstein ’14, “I’m excited for the movie because Josh Hucherson is hot, and Liam Hemsworth is hot too… even though he’s pretty short.” Who will Katniss choose?
3) The Action
The Hunger Games will be packed with action. Twenty-four kids from a futuristic, dystopian America known as Panem are forced to join the televised games and fight for the death, until only one victor remains. We will experience all the bloodshed, tears, and bravery in front of our own eyes. The Hunger Games will be a thrilling picture that will keep you on your toes.
4) Costumes
When Katniss and Peeta arrive at the Capitol, we get a glimpse of a dazzling world where people have blue skin, pink hair, and bizarre clothing. Judianna Makovsky, costume designer, will make this all so real, as she did in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
5) Set Design and Visual Effects
The book, written by Suzanne Collins, describes every kind of landscape, from cities, forests, mines, mountains, valleys, and deserts. Additionally, the infamous arena will come alive in the film, complete with its deadly traps and dangerous enemies.
The Hunger Games hits theaters March 23rd. You can currently get your tickets for the “Games” online, but they’re going fast; in the words of Effie Trinket, “may the odds be ever in your favor!”
