The Blake boys varsity tennis team was recently featured in The Star Tribune not for their athletic achievements, but rather for their character off the courts. When a Thomas Edison High School player’s racquet broke during the first match in the section tournament, Blake player Owen Rickert ‘17 loaned the player one of his extra racquets to prevent a forfeit, as the Edison player did not have an alternative racquet. The two teams then “had a group huddle… which usually doesn’t happen. It was just a sign of mutual respect,” says captain Taylor Parr ‘14. “These are just the nicest guys,” he said of the team. Parr later collected 26 of Blake players’ extra racquets and donated them to Edison’s under-equipped program.
