Endless love interview with Alex Pettyfer
What an exciting opportunity it was to interview the star of this year’s romantic movie: Endless Love. Known for his major roles in Alex Rider: Stormbreaker, I Am Number Four, Beastly, and Magic Mike, Alex Pettyfer cast himself into the role of adoring, caring David with a dark, unfortunate past, and a hope to find to true love. Unlike any other role we have seen him play, Pettyfer truly devotes himself to his character, and throughout the interview, it was clear that this was not just a character to play, but a part of this famous actor that so many have yet to see.
As this was a remake of the original 1981 film, this still depicted the strong true love that so many adolescents and young adults so desire to have. This was not just about experiencing a romance between two young teenagers. This was about finding the true love that is so rare to find. A love that is worth fighting for, a love that will set a fire to the house, a love that will cause someone to end up in jail, a love that will bring a restraining order, a love that could bring out the most deepest secrets of the past, present, and future. “Fight for love, fight for what’s worth fighting for and never give up,” says Pettyfer during the interview as he describes his role of David in the film, and his personal view in reality.
To summarize, the film is about David (Alex Pettyfer) and Jade (Gabriella Wilde) who meet on their graduation day and begin a summer-long romance that portrays all the qualities of a strong, committed, and faithful love that, as the film indirectly explains, everyone deserves. As the couple faces obstacles, including David’s dark past, Jade’s opportunity for an internship at her future college, and the most intimidating, Jade’s father’s indestructible influence over her. Because she was has always been a timid and secluded young girl, Jade has never felt that rush of love that suddenly sweeps her off her feet. As her family welcomes in David with open arms because they are all in need of an emotional awakening, the only unmovable stone left to convince is Jade’s father. Dealing with his own personal problems, Jade’s father is reluctant to approve of David: “She doesn’t need this,” he would say to his wife (Jade’s mother). As all romance films conclude with a happy ending, this one did just as well. Although Jade’s parents end up getting a divorce, Jade and David are happily reunited and will clearly spend as much time as they have together.
When asked about his character, Pettyfer explained how David is like a beacon of hope throughout the movie. He is such a loving, caring, and optimistic young teen that is seems as though he is what makes this intimate relationship possible from the start. He is so devoted, so passionate, and so loyal to love that he does not give up, given any complications. In all aspects, Pettyfer describes as being, “very excited to play David’s character, as it was a role I can relate to.” What made this film so uplifting was its riskier edge and its reflection of actual adolescent emotions and desires. The slogan, “Say Goodbye To Innocence” is definitely a sentiment that many of teens and young adults could describe their, either past, present, or future, loving relationship as some point or another.
