Don’t Worry, Be Happy
Make time to do things that bring you joy
In the midst of these stressful, uncertain times it is imperative to make time for things that you enjoy, love and that will make you happier.
As avid dog lovers, my family made the decision to adopt a puppy in April. After our travel plans were suddenly cancelled, we found ourselves wanting to pick her up sooner. So, we decided upon picking her up during the first week of Spring Break. Having her in my family has led to so much happiness, joy, and has created the perfect opportunity for a distraction from reality outside of my home. Being responsible for a puppy has motivated us to get outside, go on long walks, and just take a break and enjoy all of the silly little moments that puppies bring with their random surges of energy.
According to a study from The American Psychological Association and the American Kennel Club, “[pet owners have] greater self esteem, were more conscientious, were more extraverted, tended to be less fearful, and tended to be less preoccupied than non-owners,” proving that having a pet makes a person happier which, in turn, makes them altogether healthier.
With all of this extra time there are so many things that you can do to boost your happiness throughout an uncertain time. Exercising more, taking a long walk, cooking, picking up a new instrument or language, doing some art, finding things to laugh at, and spending time with a pet are all great ways to bring a little more joy and relieve some stress in your life.
