We cross by the library on our commute to classes every day, whether it’s trekking to a physics class or heading to the Danielson, but how well do we really know the resources of our library?
PK-12 Library Department Chair Lizz Buchanan noted that “on the day that SIAC was making the video about the first day of school, they were doing it on point-and-click digital cameras and one of them broke, and they were lamenting it in the library, and I was like, do you want to check them out? We have media equipment!”
Buchanan went on to state that “[the library] has cameras, camcorders, a GoPro, a 360 camera” and that “the cameras used to be [the library’s] most popular item, but with the rise of the cell phone, the only time they really get used is during global programs.” She also stated that “students don’t even realize that we have access to many newspapers, like the New York Times and the Star Tribune.”
After hearing about these underused resources, I went to try them for myself. I’m an avid reader of the news and I’ve actively used my access to these newspapers throughout my high school experience, and I highly recommend that anyone that is interested in current events (or even just fun and thought-provoking stories) read both the “Star Tribune” and the “New York Times”. When I went to go check out a camera, Student Innovation Coordinator Nat Gilsdorf informed me that the school even has access to virtual reality headsets and that they are just “lying there since nobody uses them.”
