…Ready for it? From all of the recent media coverage, it is apparent that sparks flew between mega pop star Taylor Swift and Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce.
Over the summer, Swift left a “Blank Space” in Kelce’s heart after he made an attempt to give her a friendship bracelet with his number on it at her concert on July 8th in Kansas City, MO. Even though Kelce fumbled that play with Swift, he knew “All Too Well” that he just needed to “Shake It Off.”
Since Swift made her not so “Delicate” appearance at the Kansas City Chiefs versus Chicago Bears game on Sunday Sept. 24, there has been a huge surge in media coverage about the two. Additionally, in only one week, searches on Stubhub for tickets to Chiefs games tripled. Not only are Chiefs tickets selling fast, but in one day alone, sales for Kelce’s jersey rose by 400%.
Since this relationship’s debut, social media has been debating about whether or not Swift put Kelce on the map. Maisie Carper ‘27, a self-proclaimed Swiftie, explains, “I had no idea who [Travis Kelce] was until he started dating Taylor Swift…but I’ve always paid attention to Taylor Swift.” According to Swift fans, Kelce gained more attention simply because he is now associated with Swift, who is a “much bigger personality,” in the opinion of Harry Wallace ‘27. According to NBC News, because of Swift’s appearance at the Chiefs game, there was a 60% increase in viewers compared to the previous weekend, most of whom were young-adult women.
Shivam Walia ‘25, a big Kansas City Chiefs fan, expresses, “I’ve always paid a lot of attention to Travis Kelce because he’s the best tight end in the league. I [didn’t] really pay much attention to Taylor Swift, but now I’m kind of forced to…” It is evident that as a result of this rumored relationship, there has been a collision of two very different aspects of our culture: arts and sports-entertainment.
As these intriguing events unfold, it is clear that Mr. 87 is catching feelings for Ms. 1989. Now we are simply left to wonder if this “Traylor” relationship will turn into the greatest “Love Story,” or if there will soon be “Bad Blood” between Kelce and Swift.
