Released in theaters on the third of July this year, “Despicable Me 4” has grossed roughly a billion dollars, making it one of the highest grossing movies of 2024 so far. We took interest in it and had the opportunity to check it out and give an honest review. The hour and thirty four minute movie was what most people would expect when going to see anything minions. This movie in particular was arguably on the less interesting side, missing the unpredictable jokes and enticing fighting, with the end feeling dull and slightly forced.
There were some good one liners, jokes, and little details every so often. The details made the movie more enjoyable than it would have been without them by adding a little life to the film and the viewers. In addition to that, the animation was excellent, with a scene with a giant jello blob being very realistic, and water animations were also excellent, so good job animators. So far everything seems good, so why does the movie not live up to expectations?
The main problem with the movie was that the plot was kind of dry and there were so many subplots that it was difficult to keep up with the pace. There were subplots for every member of Gru’s family and the villains and side characters. It felt like the writers were doing too much to make up for the main plot being meh.
This could be a matter of too many movies, since sometimes franchises lose their spark after a lot of movies, or it could be a matter of the writers simply having less ideas and needing to churn out new ideas for the producers.
We go to very rigorous school, especially at the start of the school year. Any form of entertainment is a great way to relax, laugh and unwind from school stresses. “Despicable Me” has a history of being a very funny and highly entertaining franchise, making you want to watch it over and over. Although falling short of expectations, “Despicable Me 4” is a great way to unwind and take a break.
