An anticipated event for many around the holiday season is Thanksgiving dinner. While many will have a variety of different dishes on their table this Thanksgiving, I am going to give my personal opinion on a few traditional Thanksgiving foods.
One of my family’s personal staples is mashed potatoes. Although not that interesting alone, I feel that mashed potatoes are the “glue” of Thanksgiving dinner- a reliable side dish that never exceeds or subceeds expectations. Something that always elevates this dish for me, however, is gravy. Mashed potatoes and gravy is one of, in my opinion, the most fundamental Thanksgiving dishes, and it will be seen on our dinner table for years to come.
A dish that is not seen on everyone’s table, but has been reappearing on mine as of recently, is baked mac and cheese. I’m personally a huge fan of this dish because of its crispy, cheesy, crust or breadcrumb topping. This comfort food is one of my favorite dishes, it’s something that almost anyone, from kids to adults, would be able to eat and enjoy.
When you think of Thanksgiving, you probably think of turkey. However, to me, turkey is not that good. I’ve found that it’s rare to come across a piece of turkey that isn’t incredibly dry and chewy, and although when cooked well it tastes much better, turkey, in my eyes, is overrated and lacks flavor.
A personal favorite of Thanksgiving for me is the dessert, or more specifically, pie. Different types of pie can be seen in grocery stores, bakeries and home ovens across the country, but some of the most popular flavors are pumpkin and pecan. Although pumpkin pie serves as the poster child of Thanksgiving, I find myself gravitating towards pecan because of the interesting texture and rich flavors.
From side dishes to the main courses, Thanksgiving food showcases an abundance of different flavors and dishes. Whether you find yourself reaching for the mashed potatoes or the turkey, there’s something for everyone to love on the dinner table.
