Since it was founded in 1900, our school has passed traditions down generations. An area with many long lasting traditions is its sports teams. Ranging from pre-game rituals to fun team activities, our athletic teams are built on tradition. But what are these traditions? Where did they stem from?
The girls tennis team had a stellar year which ended with winning state and defending their title. Captain Fatemeh Vang ‘27 says that a recent tradition is going out to eat. Vang states that “after the very first practice, we would go out to Yum the restaurant” for “team bonding”. One of her personal favorite traditions is before each match. Vang says, “we do our little team huddle and in the team huddle we do like a little toe wave,” with their feet, a great way to make the atmosphere a little less tense before each match begins.
The boys hockey team is currency gearing up for the winter season. This year will be Eli Crosby’s ‘26 second year playing for the bears. He enjoys many of the team’s longstanding traditions such as team “two touch” with a soccer ball before games as well as fun team dinners. Crosby especially likes the team’s holiday gift exchange, stating, “One of my favorite traditions is doing a secret santa gift exchange because we are able to bring some of the holiday cheer into the team.”
The sport of lacrosse is a speedy, fast-paced sport played on a field with 20 players, 10 on each team. Captain Charlotte Palmby ‘25 has been playing lacrosse since she was 3 and is currently playing for the lacrosse team in the spring. She says that the lacrosse team does an activity called “psych buddies” where the coach gives you a note and you write that person an empowering note. Palmby states that the note is inspirational because “they don’t know who you are and it’s supposed to like be a motivational note before each game.”
