2024 has been a year with many significant events, as we continue to navigate this year while it comes to a close it’s important to reflect on the memories we’ve been a part of. This year has been filled with many events, from a tumultuous series of hurricanes to the Kendrick vs Drake, Brat trends, the Timberwolves’ season, Trump assassination attempts, and P Diddy’s arrest.
Amanda Nwachukwu ‘27 said the most memorable thing of this year for her will be, “everyone getting their licenses and driving to Crumbl.” The most impactful thing of this year is the election, everyone will inevitably remember different events shaped by who we are, our experiences, and our values. However, as a whole, the presidential election is bound to impact everyone on a global scale. Ben Cady said, “The election is huge… it was surprising in 2016, but it wasn’t as surprising as this time.”
The election wasn’t just memorable in itself it was the events leading up to it that made it climatic, whether it was Donald Trump getting shot at twice, Kamala Harris’s SNL feature, or celebrity endorsements. An event that was rooted in politics became a cultural phenomenon. The election gained a lot of traction not only from smaller events but also from the candidates because of the polarization and the difference between the two candidates. From the first Black female presidential candidate to the increasing polarization, commented on by Dion Crushon: “Trump is such a polarizing figure, that for those who voted for him or didn’t for him, it’s going to be very memorable because he’s an unforgettable person.” With pressing issues that have created a significant political divide, this election was personal for many.
Moreover, the election was a highly anticipated event, as Crushon continues, “There’s been so much about this [election] being existential, or that democracy is on the line, which has kind of amped up the seeming significance. Some of that is hyperbole, but at the same time, it has created this impression that this election is the most important election ever.” With one of the most closely watched elections in history, this election is expected to have large ramifications, with a Republican Senate, House, and President we can expect to see more polarized policies to be passed within the next four years The election will have a lasting and undeniable impact on our futures.
