Have you ever wondered what ultimate frisbee is actually about? It’s not just tossing a disc around in your free time: it’s a high-speed, strategy-packed sport, and the open team is all in. The team is “open,” as anybody, regardless of gender, can join. Ultimate frisbee involves throwing a frisbee between your team until it reaches the end zone, only moving downfield in the air. And without refs, players call their own fouls and must play with integrity.
Tyler Flikke ’27 described the team’s practice, which happens “three times a week.” He said, “We start practices with just the basics, like throwing, running up and down the field. Then we go to a small scrimmage, and we finish off with a full field scrimmage.”
Flikke also elaborated on the details of the sport, including that “There’s two types of positions: handlers, and cutters. Handlers mostly throw the disc down the field, and the cutters’ job is to catch it. Then they toss it back to the handlers, and the handlers go and throw it again.”
Captain Boone Tutterow ’25 aims to keep the team connected and create a positive environment on and off the field. Tutterow’s message for anyone considering the team is that “It’s very casual, but you can make it as competitive as you want it to be,” emphasizing its flexibility and positive spirit. When asked about the variety of players, he stated, “You’ll find great teammates who only want the best from you.” Flikke added, “It’s a very fun, intense sport…my favorite part about it is all of the people, and it’s just a fun environment.”
The team has games most weeks on Fridays with a few occasional tournaments scattered throughout the season. Alex Cracraft ’27 asks for support, saying, “It’s fun and we don’t have many people that watch our games.” The team will compete at the state tournament on June 1. In the meantime, the focus is on improving, continuing to develop their skill.
